Season one of this show was based on All Systems Red, the first book of The Murderbot Diaries. I watched it because I was curious, I was also a bit dubious because the TV and film adaptations of books are rarely as good as the books themselves, and they often do the book or books in question a disservice by changing a lot of fundamental details and failing to capture the essence of what made the books so special.
This show changed a lot of things, and I didn’t like most of them. But I loved the casting and the sets, so I decided to forget about the book for a bit and watch the show like it was it’s own thing. Seen from that perspective, it’s a good show. I don’t like the ways in which they changed some of my favourite characters, but the changes worked within the context of the show, and they didn’t tinker much with the main character, who is the heart of the book, so I was able to let the other stuff go.
I’d tell anyone who asked me to do themselves a favour and read the book, but as TV shows go, this was pretty good.
